When I first started ENC 2135, I wasn’t sure if I was going to survive the class. This was mainly due to the fact that it was a morning class that I not only had to wake up at 7 am for, but was also a full hour and half long. On top of that I wasn’t too keen on the fact that the class was only for FSU students, and that all my other friends going to other colleges were covered with both English classes (since we all took ENC 1102). Luckily 3 great things happened:
1) I found out ENC 1102 substitutes for a required Gen. Ed. Writing credit.
2) The class was not so much literature-analyzation based as it was creative writing (my favorite kind of English class).
3) I had a fantastic and fun teacher: Mat Wenzel.
Like I mentioned in the beginning, I thought that I would fall asleep during an English class in the early-morning. From the very first day Mat introduced himself to us, I knew that I was wrong; and now that the class is over I can Definitely say that I was. Mat was so passionate about this particular subject since he himself is a poet; and not in the boring nerd type of way, but the kind of passion that sparks other people’s interest in the subject. Unlike the other ENC 2135 classes, Mat made us do blog posts throughout the summer, which I thought were very helpful in improving my analysis and writing skills. He also conducted our workshop-conferences at the Sweet Shop, which was one of my favorite parts of the class because it was very nostalgic. Back in high school, my AP Language & Composition teacher would always offer help and tutoring on Sundays at our local Panera Bread, so it was a very nice reminder of home.
I would say the class in general should be offered at every college. I know FSU is a college that is known for wanting all of its students to be integrated into its community (which if that’s not proven enough through this class, then it should be through the “Chart Your Course” class, which I will be taking in the fall), but that’s how it should be everywhere. The first project started off with our journey from high school, and then the second project basically forced us to metaphorically jump head-first into the FSU community. Now that may sound a bit aggressive, but there is no bad consequence that comes from putting yourself out there, and trying to find a place where you feel you belong at the college of your choice (at least not that I know of). Then the third project basically just taught us basic business advertisement skills that we all should learn, because as the old saying states: “business is a part of everything.” Overall, I really feel that I benefited from this class, especially with having Mat as my teacher since I know other students in other classes were jealous of the way that he taught my class. It’s definitely sparked my interest to continue with my writing career.
